All soldiers or former soldiers who are Dutch nationals and who served the Kingdom of the Netherlands in a conflict – for instance during the Second World War, or in the former Dutch East Indies or New Guinea – are classified as veterans. There is also a fast-growing group of younger veterans. The government has enshrined social recognition and care for veterans in the Veterans Act, so that veterans and their families receive the support to which they are entitled.
