Applying for a vehicle registration certificate
If you have registered a vehicle in your own name, you will have a registration card for that vehicle. The old paper registration certificate no longer exists. There is now a registration card with a chip. The registration card provides the details of the vehicle and the licence plate holder, such as the weight of the vehicle and your address details.

When will you receive a registration card?
If you are purchasing a new vehicle, you will receive a registration card when the vehicle is delivered. If you are buying a used vehicle, you must register the vehicle in your name. This is known as a transfer. A registration card will be sent to you after the transfer. With the registration card, you will also be sent a registration code. You will need this code if you want to sell, trade in, scrap or export your vehicle, or suspend its registration.
Importing a vehicle
If you are making an application to import a vehicle from outside the Netherlands, you must apply to the RDW for a Dutch licence plate for that vehicle.
