Temporary Protection Directive extended up to and including 4 March 2026
The war in Ukraine is not over yet. The Council of the European Union has therefore extended the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) by one year up to and including 4 March 2026. This will allow refugees from Ukraine to remain in EU Member States for one year longer.
As millions of people from Ukraine fled the war with Russia, the Council of the European Union triggered the TPD on 4 March 2022. This gave refugees from Ukraine temporary rights to reception, medical care, work and education in all EU member states. The TPD was initially activated for one year, with the possibility of extending it 2 times up to and including 4 March 2025. Given the uncertain situation in Ukraine, the Council of the European Union has now decided to extend the TPD in its current form for another year.
