How can I request an extract or an official copy of a civil status record?
It is possible to request extracts or official copies of records held in the Register of Births, Deaths, Marriages and Registered Partnerships. You can request an official copy or an extract from the municipality where the documents were drawn up.
Official copy of a civil status record
An official copy of a civil status record takes the form of a photocopy of the document in question. The photocopy bears a stamp and the signature of a Registrar of Births, Deaths, Marriages and Registered Partnerships. The following people can request an official copy of a civil status record:
- yourself (for documents relating to you);
- an authorised representative;
- anyone with a legitimate interest in the record, for example someone who needs it for use in legal proceedings.
When submitting your request, you must provide a valid identity document.

A civil status record extract contains only the essential details of the record. The following people can request an civil status record extract:
- yourself (for documents relating to you);
- an authorised representative;
- other interested parties (such as a spouse or heir).

The following types of record exist:
- birth certificate;
- death certificate;
- marriage certificate;
- divorce certificate;
- certificate of registered partnership (if a registered partnership is annulled, an endorsement is added to the certificate).
Requesting an extract from abroad
You still can request a civil status record extract if you are a Dutch national living abroad and are no longer listed in the Personal Records Database (BRP). You need to apply to the municipality where the record was drawn up.
