Housing market
There are more than seven million homes in the Netherlands. The government carries out several surveys of the housing market every year to determine what kind of homes are needed, how many and where. The government also decides whether older dwellings can be renovated so that more homes are available.
First homes and new homes
The housing market consists partly of people seeking a first home of their own, for example young people currently living with their parents. It also includes people who already have a home but are looking for a new one. To increase the number of people moving between the different types of housing, there must be enough homes for them all. That is why new homes are being built.
