Humanitarian aid
People in need urgently require food, shelter and medicine to survive and rebuild their lives. That is why the Netherlands supports humanitarian organisations like the International Red Cross and the United Nations. The Netherlands is also committed to ensuring the safety of aid workers.
People in Ukraine, the Middle East, Sudan and many other places often live in dangerous conditions. They may have to deal with natural disasters such as earthquakes or flooding, or be affected by a war or conflict, or have to flee from these situations. The Netherlands will not abandon these people.
Supporting humanitarian organisations
The Netherlands works with other countries to make humanitarian aid possible, for example by providing financial support to United Nations organisations such as the World Food Programme and UNICEF. The Netherlands also supports the International Red Cross and the Dutch Relief Alliance. Dutch financial support is predictable and not tied to specific issues or target groups. This enables organisations to take action quickly when and where it is needed most urgently.
The Netherlands also contributes to international emergency aid through the European Union. And it supports local aid organisations that can respond quickly and effectively in crisis situations.
Safety of humanitarian personnel
The Netherlands is committed to ensuring the safety and security of emergency aid workers. It is important that aid workers can reach people who urgently need help, and can do their work in safety, even in dangerous circumstances. For example, the Netherlands supports UN agreements on the protection of humanitarian workers.
The Netherlands also invests in training for humanitarian personnel so that they are well prepared for dangers and risks.
Importance to the Netherlands
The Netherlands helps people survive and rebuild their lives so they do not have to flee their country and seek asylum in Europe. This is good for global stability, and good for the Netherlands.
