Request exemption from VMBO, HAVO or VWO examination subjects in a VAVO programme
Are you following a VAVO programme and about to take a staatsexamen (state exam) in a subject where you already have sufficient knowledge and proficiency? If you can prove your knowledge level, you may be eligible for an exemption from 1 or more examination subjects. This means you will not have to take an examination for these subjects.

VAVO progammes with state examinations
The state examinations are offered for:
- voorbereidend middelbaar beroepsonderwijs – VMBO (pre-vocational secondary education)
- hoger algemeen voortgezet onderwijs – HAVO (higher general secondary education)
- voorbereidend wetenschappelijk onderwijs – VWO (pre-academic education)
Conditions for examination subject exemptions for a VAVO programme
To receive an examination subject exemption (in Dutch) you must proof that you have sufficient knowledge and proficiency of that subject. You can do this with a degree, diploma, certificate or other proof of education. The document attesting to your proficiency cannot be more than 10 years old.
How to acquire exemption
Submit your application for an exemption from an examination subject (in Dutch) to Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs – DUO (education implementation service)
Your application must include the following documents:
- the original diploma, certificate or other proof of the course;
- a description of the subject material of the course;
- a copy of your proof of identity (passport or driving licence).
If the CvTE approves your request, you will receive a certificate of exemption.
