Government invests in fight against corruption
Justice and Security Minister David van Weel visited the National Police Internal Investigations Department in The Hague today on the occasion of the International Day Against Corruption.
During the visit, the minister highlighted the harmful impact of corruption on the rule of law and society:
"Criminals can only operate with help from the inside and therefore always look for the weakest spot. We must not be naive, but ensure that employees are resilient and aware of criminal influences. That is why a decisive government-wide approach to corruption is necessary," the minister said.
The Ministry of Justice and Security will structurally make €5 million available from 2025 to tackle corruption, some of which is earmarked for the National Police Internal Investigations Department. The investigative capacity and expertise of the National Police Internal Investigations Department will be strengthened and investments will be made in acquiring advanced IT tools, data processing facilities and additional training. These investments, previously included in the 2025 budget of the Ministry of Justice and Security, are aimed at tackling corruption more effectively and ensuring the integrity of the government.
The National Police Internal Investigations Department plays a crucial role in investigating crimes committed by government officials and officials in semi-governmental organisations, especially in the domain of official corruption. The additional funds will allow the organisation to further expand its capacity and expertise to continue the fight against corruption even more intensively.
