Cathy van Beek –Sustainable Healthcare Project Planner: We’re at a great location here in Zwolle. At the Sustainable Healthcare Conference. The third such conference where healthcare institutions, businesses and authorities sign up to joint initiatives. And make pledges on sustainability in healthcare.

Léon Wever – Sustainable Healthcare Programme Director, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport: Today we launched two initiatives. One is the Expertise Centre on Sustainable Care. A network involving all kinds of organisations involved in healthcare. Aimed at exchanging information and advising on ways to make healthcare more sustainable. Especially when it comes to buildings.

Léon Wever – Sustainable Healthcare Programme Director, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport: The problem’s incredibly urgent, as we read nearly every day in the papers. We’ve also got a second initiative. A government website about the Green Deal on Sustainable Healthcare.

Léon Wever – Sustainable Healthcare Programme Director, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport: So we can learn from each other. And inform and inspire each other.

Prof. Guus Velders – Senior Researcher, National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM): 2015 was hotter. 2016 was hotter still. 2017 and 2018 didn’t set any records, but looking at the whole period they were warmer. The Earth is heating up, that’s quite clear. I’ve shown that climate change affects us all, and that it’s really happening. You can see the sea level rising. You can see the droughts – like last summer. You can see the heatwaves – like last summer. Climate change affects us all. It’s not a distant prospect, a future scenario.
It’s already happening.

*31 different parties sign up to the Green Deal by placing their signature on a foam board.*
Cathy van Beek –Sustainable Healthcare Project Planner: The CZ Group is the first health insurer to sign.
Angelique Bonte - CZ We look at the regions where CZ has a lot of policyholders, then we form sustainable coalitions, as we call them, with healthcare institutions there. In a sustainable coalition we jointly look at the potential for improvement. Not just with respect to actual care and treatment, but also the way it’s managed. The suppliers of preferred drugs have to sign a sustainability commitment once we consider contracting them.

Frank Buijs – Takeda Nederland: Takeda is well equipped to provide a tailor-made approach to drugs. We control their manufacture ourselves. And also their supply to patients. We’re able to make the lowest possible doses. And tailor doses to every single patient. We manufacture one day in advance and supply to patients within 24 hours, so that nothing gets wasted.

Dr Michiel Zijp – Senior Researcher, National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM): It’s now clear that most of the average hospital’s carbon footprint is caused by energy use in buildings, transport of patients and health professionals, and drug use.

Prof. Guus Velders – Senior Researcher, National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM): The anaesthetics used in operating theatres are potent greenhouse gases. Several thousand times more potent than CO2. We need to cut their use. Or find alternatives to reduce these emissions.

Prof. Jacqueline Cramer, Conference Chair: It’s time to announce the winners of this year’s Sustainable Healthcare Professional awards. *The winners of the jury prize assemble on the podium*

Marjolijn Duijvestein – Gastrointestinal and Liver Specialist, Amsterdam UMC, one of the winners: I devised a project called ’Plastic Poop’. Because I was concerned at the amount of plastic we use every day in our work. And that we healthcare professionals actually don’t know how to recycle it or what to do with it. Basically, it’s being forced on us and we want to stop it.

Piter Oosterhof – chemist in an outpatient clinic, one of the winners: PharmaSwap is a marketplace where chemists can alert other chemists to drugs that are past their sell-by-date, but are still good enough to be used, so as to prevent them being wasted. There are 20 chemists in our pilot and the data shows that we’ve traded 68 consignments via this platform. Achieving a cost reduction of €54,000.

Jeroen Meijerink – Head of operating theatres at Radboud University Medical Center, one of the winners: I want to use this award to encourage other hospitals to join in efforts to make operating theatres more environmentally friendly. Operating theatres are major polluters in a hospital. If multiple hospitals in the Netherlands work to reduce such pollution, then together we’ll have a big impact on making healthcare in the Netherlands more sustainable.

Léon Wever – Sustainable Healthcare Programme Director, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport: Last year we started with 130 signatories to the Green Deal. Now we have 200. We invite all actors in the healthcare sector, whether they’re healthcare institutions, funding bodies, knowledge institutes or businesses……to all sign the Green Deal……and make healthcare more sustainable.
