Water distribution between two rivers at high water
Hondsbroeksche Pleij at Westervoort, near Arnhem, is an important water-management area of the Netherlands where the Lower Rhine and IJssel split. The has been widened the river here to increase discharge capacity in times of high water. The river widening consisted of relocating a dike landwards and building a high-water channel that gives the river extra room to discharge water. The channel contains a flood control barrier which guarantees the distribution of water between the Lower Rhine and the IJssel in times of high water.
