Effects of HVO on pollutant emissions of Stage V non-road diesel engines

HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a drop-in alternative to regular, mostly fossil, diesel fuel. HVO is a renewable fuel with a lower carbon intensity, but lower emissions of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are also often claimed. However, the result of the research conducted is that HVO generally has no or a negligible effect on the particulate and NOx emissions of a Stage V engine with a properly functioning NOx reduction catalyst and particulate filter. For Stage V diesel engines without exhaust gas aftertreatment, HVO leads to lower particulate emissions. For such engines lower NOx emissions cannot always be claimed.
