Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) Certification Pilot Study on Hydrogen Derivatives Produced in Australia

Pilot study for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) certification, focusing specifically on hydrogen derivatives produced in Australia, with an emphasis on potential production sites in the Oakajee region. The primary aim of the study is to assess the eligibility of these projects to export their products to the Netherlands and to Germany.

An important component of the study is the analysis of the entire supply chain. This includes an examination of the implications of employing renewable energy sources for production of hydrogen (H2) or ammonia (NH3), storage at the Australian port of departure, transportation to the port of entry in the Netherlands, storage at the port of entry, and subsequent transportation to end-users in either the Netherlands or Germany.

For the fuel of the tankers, three options were considered, namely heavy fuel oil, bio-diesel and green ammonia.

Finally, the additional costs for the producer to meet the European RFNBO criteria were also considered.

The conclusion is that it is very possible to meet the requirements and that it is also possible to bring RFNBO hydrogen from Australia to Europe in a competitive way.

The research was commissioned by Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and conducted by Fichtner Engineering and Consulting.
