Everyone healthy, fit and resilient: that’s the motto of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.
The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport is committed to improving the health and quality of life of all people in the Netherlands. The ministry aims for good quality, affordable and sustainable healthcare and support. It promotes prevention and healthy nutrition. And ensures first-rate sports facilities for all, from recreational athletes to professionals.
The ministry pursues these goals together with its partners and of course with everyone in the Netherlands. Because we all want to be healthy, fit and resilient.
Public health
The ministry encourages healthy behaviour, such as regular exercise, not smoking, drinking in moderation, safe sex and good nutrition. When people experience problems with their health, they should easily be able to consult a general practitioner, specialist doctor or other healthcare provider. Everyone in the Netherlands has health insurance that covers a broad range of treatment and care. The ministry works with health insurers, providers and patient organisations to ensure sufficient facilities and sufficient choice of healthcare provider.
Welfare
Not everyone in the Netherlands benefits equally from our country’s prosperity. Some people are not economically independent or are unable to participate actively in society. The ministry works with the ministries responsible for economic affairs, education, housing and the environment to provide a robust social infrastructure. Volunteer work and youth care are important elements of social policy.
Sport
Sport is good for people’s health, provides a social network and contributes to personal development. The ministry’s sporting mission is to enable everyone to be active in a safe and healthy way. The ministry also promotes top-level sport and provides financial support to elite athletes who represent the Netherlands in international competitions, so that they can perform at the top of their game.
